Extract actionable BI using Excel 2010 PowerPivot and DAX language

Featuring 200 ready-to-use DAX queries, Practical PowerPivot & DAX Queries for Excel 2010 shows Office and Excel power users how to take advantage of DAX (Data Analysis Expressions)—the new standard language for extracting BI within Excel. An entire section shows how to create tables, pivot tables, and PowerPivot tables in Excel. You can then progress to writing DAX queries and formulas to harness the power of BI.

This solutions-based guide contains more than 200 DAX queries that can be immediately applied across a wide variety of BI-related problems. It begins with fundamental principles and simple queries and rapidly progresses to complex and sophisticated queries. The book is structured as follows:

  • Query: Introduction and description of query and its use
  • Syntax: Complete DAX syntax
  • Result: Screen shot showing the data returned in an Excel 2010 pivot table
  • Analysis: Analysis of the results and tips for customization

Review

1. SciTech Book News, February 2011 Issue

Beginning with a foreword by Thierry D’hers, one of the lead designers of this new Microsoft Business Intelligence software, this work provides definitive instruction in the basic use of PowerPivot and the companion scripting language DAX. This software allows business users to access enterprise level, company wide information sources from their desktop installations of the Excel spreadsheet application without the help of their IT department yet within a controlled and connected data pool. The first half of this guide is a reference that describes each of the capabilities of the plug-in within the Excel environment with a screen shot and step-by-step instructions. The second section provides over 250 DAX formulas for extracting specific types of data and reports from the PivotPoint/Excel environment. DAX formulas as well as sample Excel data used in this work are available online. Tennick is an expert in database design and Microsoft’s SQL server. (Annotation ©2011 Book News Inc.
