Data Warehouse Design: Modern Principles and Methodologies
Golfarelli, Matteo ; Rizzi, Stefano

Sample Ch 01

Data Warehouse Design: Modern Principles and Methodologies was recently reviewed on Books-On-Line web site.

“I remember an incident when a mid-level data analyst was asked to supply the backup for a decision to be made by management. He went to the meeting with a printed-out that was at least a foot thick. For a simply yes-no decision this was immense overkill. Unfortunately with the tremendous amount of data being collected by automated systems today this kind of approach is all to easy. The concept of data warehousing is to take in all this kind of data and then to provide a way to pull out just the points relative to the problem at hand — converting if you will a mass of data into relevant information. The authors are university professors working in advanced information processing. They have studied data warehousing from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint going out of the university environment into the business world. They cover the advanced processing procedures being developed to facilitate data warehousing and give some case studies from companies that have implemented such projects. Although the two professors are Italian, the writing is surprisingly readable. Either their English is very good or the publisher has done a superb job of editing.”

Three Photography Books for Gift Giving

By RIK FAIRLIE

There are plenty of useful Web sites that help aspiring photographers sharpen their digital photography skills. But, as heretical as this may sound, sometimes you just want a book. A printed book, one with handsomely produced photos that demonstrate photography at its best.

Over the past month I have looked at books on digital photography and found some that would make great holiday gifts (for those of you who can’t afford that fast prime lens for the snapper on your list). Two of the three books I have selected are instructive guides that target digital photography novices, although they also offer some great insights for those who have used a camera for years. The third book targets young photogs with any kind of camera and an active sense of creativity.

“Perfect Digital Photography,” ($26.39)by Jay Dickman and Jay Kinghorn, is an end-to-end guide to digital cameras, photography concepts, and photo-editing and workflow tools like Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop.

The book has an academic feel to it; it is organized in very logical sections and the writing is informative yet pleasant. The authors include plenty of photos captured by Mr. Dickman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, that show you how photographic techniques and camera settings enhance image quality. Mr. Dickman also provides some great and easy-to-use tips from his career. In one, for instance, he describes how to adjust white balance to create a “warming” effect on light, much the same way that 81A filters did with film cameras.

“Perfect Digital Photography” also has chapters on understanding light, taking shots of people, and travel photography. The images captured by Mr. Dickman are inspiring but also instructional: He includes shooting details such as lens used, shutter speed, ISO setting and aperture setting.

This is a great overview of digital photography, from buying to composition to creating online Web galleries. And it offers plenty of online links for further exploration.

Also, PERFECT DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Author JAY DICKMAN was be featured on NBC Nightly News in the “Making a Difference” segment.  The segment is online at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032619/#34438533

Hacking Exposed Malware and Rootkits
Davis, Michael; Bodmer, Sean; LeMasters, Aaron

1) Brian Krebs, Reporter for The Washington Post and Author of the
Security Fix Blog

“Accessible but not dumbed-down, this latest addition to the Hacking Exposed series is a stellar example of why this series remains one of the best-selling security franchises out there. System administrators and Average Joe computer users alike need to come to grips with the sophistication and stealth of modern malware, and this book calmly and clearly explains the threat.”

2) Christopher Jordan, VP, Threat Intelligence McAfee; Principal
Investigator to DHS Botnet Research

“The authors tackle Malware, a deep and diverse issue in computer security, with common terms and relevant examples. Malware is a cold deadly tool in hacking; the authors address it openly, showing its capability with direct technical insight.  The result is a good read that moves quickly filling in the gaps even for the knowledgeable reader.”

4) June 2010 issue of SciTech Book News

Hacking Exposed Malware provides unique insights into the techniques behind malware and rootkits. If you are responsible for security, you must read this book!”

“Emphasizing what protections do and do not work, computer security specialists Davis, Sean M. Bodmer, and Aaron LeMasters examine software that can take over or emulate company insiders to bypass external defenses, execute on machines, and run with all the freedom and power of the insider’s user account. They cover the method of infection and functionality of malware; and user-mode, kernel-mode, virtual, and future rootkits. Turning to prevention then, they describe antivirus technology, host protection systems, host-based intrusion prevention, rootkit detection, and general security practices.
